So without further adieu, here is my
list of games you don't want to miss out on:
-Dark Souls
The "spiritual sequel" to Demon's Souls. This game is not for the weak
hearted. Every one who's heard about this game has heard that its
insanely difficult. Now that may put of a lot of people from even
attempting to play it, but, its difficulty is apparent due to the fact that
this is one of the few games that actually pack a challenge and rewards its
players. Playing it will give you a sense of nostalgia and remind you of
the good old pixelated days, where (in my opinion) games were a lot more
challenging and a lot more satisfying. Combined with great visuals, epic
soundtrack, masterful dialogue (albeit very short), this game shall win your
heart, but with a lot of time and patience (and a few angry rants here and
there).
-Bastion
This game can be summed up with one word: Stunning! If you are looking for a great soundtrack, and an amazing story, which is both short and sweet, then look no further. In addition to its stunning visuals, engaging story, and moving soundtrack, it's added gameplay and mini challenges keep you coming back for more. It's strongest point would be the narration. In-fact, Valve's DotA2 has added a pack adding the Bastion Narrator's voice to the in game narrator. Yup, thats how good the narration was!
-Shadows of the Damned
The only thing this game was missing was a strong media coverage. Not many people have heard of this game, and very little know that it was a collaboration between two power house video game creator legends: Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil) and Suda51 (No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw and the upcoming Killer is Dead). Imagine those two working on a game, one being the master of all zombie survival games and the other being the Tarantino of Video game. The story is simple, but the characters are very very unique and extremely entertaining. The world is you play in is eerie, your companion is a flaming skull called Johnson (who also turns into your weapons) and your job, well, your job is shoot your way to the end!
Game of the year: 2012, need I say more? Coming to you from "That Game Company", makers of Flow and Flower (epically calming game). The artwork in this game is just breathtaking, and the soundtrack is on an entirely different level of awesomeness. Its soundtrack is such an achievement it was actually nominated for a Grammy (the first in video game history)! For those of you who wish to try something new, check out Journey, and try not to be sad once you are done with the game.
-Journey
-Limbo
This game is in black and white, and that's not a bad thing. A simple side scroller, with almost deafening silence. This game challenges you to think outside the box a bit when walking to your destination. It has a cool dark vibe to it, and an almost non existing story. It gets violent and will shock you at some times, but it is worth seeing it through. This game is simply an adventure, and the lack of colours will make you appreciate the sharpness of the grey scale like never before. One of the main challenges of this
game is to get the trophy/achievement of finishing it in one sitting without
dying more than 3 times.
-Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Series
Giving you the finger has been reinvented. Don't be skeptical about this one, I
assure you it is one of the best video game series out there (no joke)!
When people ask about the genre, I am at a loss for words. You play as a
lawyer/investigator. It might sound childish and weird, but trust me,
this game is not easy for kids and appropriately challenging for adults.
There are four main parts to the game, each with an amazing soundtrack, an epic
story, and brilliant game play. What is also amazing about this series is
that, each game has its own unique story, and once you play part four (which
introduces a new protagonist) you realize that all of them were connected
masterfully.
-Catherine
The best puzzle game I've played so far. The system is so unique and simple, yet can be (and actually is) expanded as you progress. It has a bit of a dating simulation element, but its very minor. In total there are 8 different endings. The story line is weird, but engaging, the gameplay is very entertaining and the soundtrack is cool. Atlus made this game very challenging (they even added a super easy mode later, which I don't think was necessary, but good fan service nevertheless).
-Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Dante vs. Wolverine, Viewtiful Joe vs. The Hulk???? This game is all sorts of chaos,
fans of the old series and new comers are sure to be impressed by the
mechanics, visuals, and just pure excitement of this game. I am a big fan
of the fighting game genre, and I can say with full confidence that this game
overpasses any of the fighting games currently out there. Most of the
roster is expertly balanced, and having a 3 vs 3 battle helps balance it out even
more. The game is very satisfying once playing, and very competitive
these days. Fan service is also outstanding because the publishers are,
to this day, patching the game and updating various issues. GET HYPE!
